A musical time-travelling journey through the decades

The YesFam Radio Show Poster

The Yes Fam Radio Show is a musical time-traveling journey through the decades, featuring songs from the 1940s to the 2010s. With music-related quizzes, puzzles, interviews, and a unique open mic-styled performance by a very special guest, the show takes you on a nostalgic adventure-filled journey.

The show was created by eight friends, Sabri from France, Molka and Daniel from Germany, Vishal (me) from India, Juan Diego from Peru, Khadija from New Zealand, Allie from USA and Jenn from Norway who met virtually during the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020 through the YesFam Community. Being from different nationalities and from different countries we had a lot of different and unique styles of music to share with each other and that’s where we came up with the idea to begin a Radio Show.

The Radio Show is our way to test our music knowledge, discover new music, and express ourselves without having to use actual words.

We pick and play music from the 1940s to the 2010s. We discuss the evolution of different styles and genres, as well as how they have inspired the music we listen to now. We interact with our listeners through music-related quizzes and games such as “What’s My Line?” which is based on the 1950s American game show of the same name. We bring a special guest to each episode who performs live for our listeners. We also host a number of unique events throughout the year to commemorate significant dates in our calendar, as well as musical achievements and months.

One of my roles on the Radio Show is to write the interview script and come up with questions to ask the guest. So here are a few of my favourite interviews and questions.

Sam Seccombe from the UK

Our special guest Sam Seccombe

VISHAL Our guest today has a great voice and people mistake Sam’s voice for John Mayer’s. So Sam what is your earliest and most significant of music that shaped you as an artist?

SABRI Sam is a multi-instrumentalist, a singer, a songwriter and a producer. Sam’s music thrives on a home-grown production style. Seeing that you are a producer yourself, can you tell us how home production is different from studio production and which famous music producer would you love to work with?

VISHAL We at the Radio Show see music as a huge inspiration to everything and around everything we do. It’s like Soundtracking your experiences with a musical journey through time. Sam has a playlist called “ Songs that keep me wanting to make music” which you guys need to check out. And as the name suggests the playlist inspires Sam to make music because they make his heart swoon! Throwback music from Disney Channel & Nickelodeon make my heart swoon and I can say that it’s my musical guilty pleasure. We were just curious what is your musical guilty pleasure?

SABRI We noticed a song on your spotify called “Cover You” which has you featuring 11 other artists, usually when we see a big collab like that it’s for charities what’s the story behind that song?

VISHAL Sam it’s so good to have you here on our show. Thank you for saying yes for being part of our show. We to believe that performing on the Radio Show is like performing at the O2 but instead of big flashy lights we have big flashy hilarious GIFs in the chat and an audience of no. just for you. So Sam before you sing for us can you tell us the meaning behind the 2 songs you are going to sing for us?

Emil Lehmann Becker from Denmark

Our Special guest Emil Lehmann Becker

VISHAL Oi Emil!! It’s wonderful to have you back on the show. Emil, as everyone knows, is the King of the Karaoke Bar here in our little community server, which is turning 3 years old this month. Emil can sing and write songs, and he enjoys sharing happy memories. So, Emil, what is your earliest and most significant musical memory, which inspired you to become a singer & songwriter?

SABRI For many of us, the year 2020 was a roller coaster ride. It taught us to confront adversity with optimism and positive reinforcements, and I believe that this has made us stronger, sharper, more motivated, and more connected. With this attitude, Emil, took on the challenge head on, not letting anyone or anything stop him, and in 2020, he released 4 singles Eps. I’ve got to say it’s not a “Miracle” that hearing Emil sing has just made us move “Closer” “By his side” — a name of his few songs. Emil what are you working on musically right now, and will you be releasing new music in 2021?

VISHAL One of the most endearing and sacred parts of camping with your friends under the start night sky is the campfire. A campfire is an intimate part of this special experience that goes far beyond simply sitting around a fire. It signifies warmth, friendship, togetherness filled with happy memories of roasting marshmallows, saying scary stories, and dancing to campfire songs and that’s a similar feeling we get on FiYEStas. FiYEStas are the Yes Fam’s version of camping and you can find Emil serenading everyone with his lovely warm voice. So Emil what’s your go-to campfire song at the FiYEStas?

SABRI Emil is a jack of all trades. He has a background in business, economics, and finance, and he can also patch you up with a new roof for your house. Emil has returned to study music after taking a gap year, and he says that is very excited to be doing homework mixing music. So, Emil, can you tell us how studying music has improved your music and what kinds of music you like to listen to?

VISHAL Before we let you set up, can you tell us the meaning behind the 2 songs you are going to sing for us and the folks in Canterbury?

The show is broadcasted live every Monday at 8:30pm CEST on the YesFam Discord Server and on Sundays at 7pm CEST in Canterbury, UK on CSR.fm.
